REDOUTE
REDOUTÉ (Pierre-Joseph). Twelve bouquets designed and composed by P. J. Redouté, lithographed by A. Prévost and Pointel du Portail. Paris, Schroth ; New-York, Bailly Ward & Cie, [ca. 1835]. Small folio (ca. 35 x 25 cm), old olive-green semi-percaline, smooth and silent spine, gold title on top cover on a long-grain garnet morocco label, gold edges (2 hooks on the back, a few freckles). 1 lithographed title sheet, and 12 lithographed plates, coloured, some gummed. Extremely rare suite, of which we find no reported copies in public library collections (Worldcat, KVK do not provide any answers). It is not described in the catalogue of the exhibition "Redoutéana", Hunt Botanical Library, 1963, except perhaps by an imprecise mention under no. 47. The numbering of the plates indicates that this suite belonged to a more extensive set, most probably published in issues. A copy of 54 plates was auctioned in London in 2004, the complete work being supposed to contain 5 issues of 12 plates (Bonhams, 15 July 2004, lot 199). The plates in this suite are, in the order in which they are found here bound: Red Giroflée and White Geranium, No. 25. - Primrose and double narcissus, No. 26. - Tigridia and pavonia, no. 27. - Carnations, no. 28. - White clove and chrisentemum, No. 29. - Laurel rose double and philica, n° 30. - Mallow and Bignonia, No. 31. - Astromeria, Geranium and Pansy, no. 32. - variegated rose and chrisentemum, No. 33. - Goat's-goat leaf and marigold, No. 34. - Hundred-leaved rose and sulphur colour, no. 35. - Coquelicot et bleuet, n° 35. Each plate printed in lithography by Villain bears the dry stamp of the publisher C. Schroth, a dealer in paintings, drawings and prints based in Paris (Lugt, Marques de collection, L.634.b).
