ESTIENNE
ESTIENNE (Henri). Epigrammata græca selecta ex Anthologia, interpretata ab Henrico Stephano [Geneva], excudebat H. Stephanus, 1570. 8 vols. with 311 p., late 18th c. basane, smooth spine, green basane title-piece, red edges (headbands faded, spines split, 3 corners worn and one broken, wetness on the first 10 pages, worms in the margins of the quires h to p. Collection offering a selection of 260 Greek epigrams taken from the "Florilegium" published four years earlier. The Latin prose versions are accompanied by verse versions written by Estienne and Paulus Melissus Schedius. The edition landed the publisher in prison: he had not asked the Council of Geneva for permission to publish it. He was reproached in particular for having published an epigram against Jean Crespin (according to: L. Clément, "Henri Estienne", pp. 469-471). Pages 305-311 containing the index are bound in this copy between the introductory leaves and page 1. Old handwritten bookplate "Pougin" on the title. (USTC 450604; GLN15-16, 2407).
