(index), pl., contemporary tan calf, spine with 5 nerves, ornamented caissons, gilt title, spotted edges (binding rubbed, head-cap uncovered, corners dull). First Latin edition of the major work of the Italian biologist Francesco Redi (1626-1697), precursor of the use of the microscope applied to zoology. This is illustrated by the frontispiece drawn and engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe, where a woman is observing an insect with this instrument. The work is further illustrated with 2 figures in the text, one of which is full-page, and 38 plates, some of them folding, all engraved on copper. Old handwritten bookplate on the title.
