(index), figs, pl., contemporary soft parchment, smooth spine, title in ink (stains on upper board, one inner hinge split; light wetness at head, mostly marginal, small tear without loss on 2nd pl., worm tract in margin p.209-236). New edition (the first appeared in 1583) of this important study on the life and customs of the Romans in antiquity, the masterwork of the German historian Rosinus (1551-1626). It contains a multitude of observations on all aspects of daily life, including religious and political organization, private life, and military activities; the fifth book is devoted to games, feasts, table manners, clothing, and wedding and funeral ceremonies. The illustration consists of several woodcut figures in the text, and 2 plates: a plan of Rome, and a plan of an ancient Roman military camp; woodcut typographical mark on title. Two old handwritten bookplates crossed out, one at the head of the title. Old underlining and marginal annotations.
