Illuminated leaf from a book of hours Beginning of the Gospel Pericopes (Gospel according to Saint John) Saint John the Evangelist writing on the island of Patmos, accompanied by the eagle, his symbol France, Normandy (Rouen?), circa 1510 Large miniature attributable to a Norman artist from the circle of Robert Boyvin (Master of Ambroise Le Veneur, active in Rouen, first quarter of the 16th century?) Illuminated border on gold ground with colored acanthus leaves, flowers and zoomorphic hybrids, ornate initial, bastard script, rubric in pale red ink Sight size: 15.5 x 11 cm. Framed leaflet Elegant miniature from a book of hours, in fine condition. Stylistically, this miniature is clearly influenced by Robert Boyvin, called "historieur" in the accounts, active from circa 1480 to 1536, trained in Rouen and inspired by the models and compositions of earlier Rouen artists, notably the "Maître de l'Echevinage de Rouen". Robert Boyvin is commonly associated with the Rouen school of illumination (early works by G. Ritter), and worked for important patrons including Cardinal Georges d'Amboise. Since the recent work of E. Adam, more than 80 manuscripts are attributed to him. A number of illuminators painted under Robert Boyvin's influence. The artist, now called "Maître d'Ambroise Le Veneur" after the work of I. Delaunay (1991), is so named after a large Missel painted for Ambroise Le Veneur de Tillières, bishop of Evreux (1511-1531) (Evreux, BM, MS lat. 100). He collaborated with Robert Boyvin on a treatise on venery painted for the Duke of Alençon (Paris, Musée du Petit-Palais, MS Dutuit 217). The present miniature has much in common with certain manuscripts attributed to the Master of Ambroise Le Veneur. Further research may enable us to find the related leaves from the same Book of Hours and refine its attribution. See: Adam E.
